Host a screening

WATCH JIMPA WITH YOUR COMMUNITY

One of the beautiful things about watching a film with other people is the ability to discuss, self-reflect, and share thoughts and experiences - which is integral to promoting understanding and change.

If you are in Australia or New Zealand, you can now host your own in-person or virtual screening of JIMPA for your friends and family, workplace, school or community group! As a host, first you license the film, and then create the event any way you want - see our suggestions below.

To request a screening, please email hello@unquiet.com.au.

HOW TO ORGANISE A SCREENING

  1. Email hello@unquiet.com.au to request a screening license. You can check the license agreement T&Cs and the license fee structure here.

  2. Once your screening is approved, the JIMPA team will send you a link to pay for your screening license, which allows you to screen JIMPA in your specific context - from an at home watch party with friends to a large organisational screening. You may wish to sell tickets to cover costs or fundraise for a cause, or you could offer tickets for free. This won’t impact your license fee.

  3. We’ll then send you the Host a Screening Pack that contains everything you need for organising, promoting and running a smooth event, including conversation prompts developed with some of our partners.

  4. Consider organising a panel discussion for after the film to offer a platform for members of LGBTIQA+ communities to share their experiences. Consider making this a diverse, multigenerational panel, and encourage your guests to bring friends from different generations.

  5. Invite your guests! Use the promotional materials - press release, poster, images and social media materials - in your Host Screening Pack.

  6. The week before your event, we’ll send you a secure link to the film. It’s important to do a tech test, and make sure everything is working ahead of time.

  7. On event day, you can choose to play Sophie Hyde’s introductory video, introduce the night yourself, or invite a key person in your community to open the night.

  8. At the end of your Q&A or panel, encourage your guests to take action. We’ll provide a holding screen template with a QR code with easy steps to follow and suggested ways to take action, but you are welcome to add your own.

    Please note:
The film may evoke strong emotions or complex personal questions for your guests. It is important to provide viewers with a list of qualified local support organisations or counselling services who have experience in the psychological, health, and legal issues specific to LGBTQIA+ people. You can find a list of national support services on this page.

FAQs

Who can host a screening?

+

Anyone in Australia or NZ! You can do this through your workplace or community group at an event space or cinema, or simply invite some friends and family over to your house. You can set up a backyard cinema, or host a formal event, a fundraiser, include a panel discussion or invite a guest speaker. You can lead a conversation (we have conversation prompts to help) or allow it to happen in an informal way.

How do I host a screening of Jimpa with my friends, community or workplace?

+

Email hello@unquiet.com.au with details of your venue, screening date and your audience. Once approved, you’ll receive an email with a link to pay for your screening license.

Once your screening license fee is paid, we’ll send you a Host Screening Pack with everything you’ll need to plan, promote and run your event! 48 hours before your screening, we’ll send you a secure link to the film. It’s important to do a tech check well before your event to make sure the film, screen, speakers and microphones (if you’re using them for a panel) are all working.

What is the license fee and agreement?

+

The license fee and agreement grants you the rights to screen Jimpa to your group - this could be your family and friends at home, your community group, at a university, your workplace or in collaboration with other organisations, or as a virtual event where everyone has a window to watch the film before coming together for a discussion online.

The license fee is tiered, based on the type of group or organisation, and the number of guests you’ll be screening the film to. For more information, including the different fee categories, click here.

Do you offer subsidised licenses?

+

Yes. If you are a trans-led organisation/group or experiencing financial hardship please get in touch with us at hello@unquiet.com.au as we have a limited number of subsidised licenses and we want you to see the film and host a conversation.

How do I organise my event?

+

Your Host Screening Pack will contain everything you’ll need to help plan a great event - including invitation copy, a film poster, a runsheet template, social media posts, a press kit and a technical setup guide. Then you can get started!

Unless you’re having a ‘watch party’ at home, you’ll need to find and book a venue. You may use a community hall or event space, or privately book your local cinema (contact them directly). Then invite your guests! We encourage you to invite people from across different generations.

In your Host Screening Pack, you’ll also find conversation prompts to guide your group’s discussion, and extra videos from the film team to prompt discussion (these are optional). You may wish to invite key members of your community to speak for a panel or Q&A after watching the film together, before opening up to your guests for conversation.

Should I organise a panel for after the film?

+

This is a great idea! A panel or Q&A offers a platform for members of LGBTIQA+ communities to share their experience and any parallels between Hannah, Frances & Jimpa's (or other characters) stories and their experience locally. Your Host Screening Pack has conversation prompts developed with our partners to help guide discussion with your group.

We encourage you to consider a diversity of perspectives on any panel and to try to make it intergenerational. Show the film and share the film's key messages to those on the panel ahead of the screening, so they have time to prepare their thoughts and responses (email hello@unquiet.com.au and let us know who it’s for, and we can send them a link to watch the film ahead of your screening).

Can I invite the film team to speak at my event?

+

Yes! Contact us at hello@unquiet.com.au if you’re interested in having filmmaker Sophie Hyde or actor Aud Mason-Hyde speak at your event in a virtual Q&A or panel, and we’ll let you know their availability and fees. If you'd like to invite them to appear in person at your event, there may be additional costs to cover their travel.

Please note Sophie and Aud will not be available for every Q&A request, but we will do our best. If you have a specific request for a cast or crew member, check in with us.

I’m in a remote area with patchy internet. Can I host a screening?

+

For most cases, we’ll provide you with a secure streaming link to watch the film. If your event is in-person for a large group, or in a remote area, we can send you a secure download link.

Does the film have closed captions?

+

We'll send all hosts an option to watch the film with or without closed captions, and also with audio descriptions. If your screening is in a cinema, please liaise with your cinema contact as required. If you have any questions, please contact us at hello@unquiet.com.au.

I’m not in Australia, can I still host a screening?

+

At this stage we only have the rights to run this program in Australia and New Zealand.

Is JIMPA appropriate for families? What is the film rated?

+

JIMPA is rated MA15+ and contains some nudity, sexual content and adult themes. The story centres around family, both biological and chosen. Within the Host Screening Pack is a ‘Host a screening guide’ that contains conversation prompts for discussion after watching the film - many of which relate to families.

How can I support JIMPA’s impact campaign?

+

Visit jimpafilm.com/impact to learn more about our impact campaign, partner organisations and ways that you and your guests can take action. If you’re a teacher, or would like to bring Jimpa into schools, we also have highschool appropriate educational resources available for download on this page.

START CONVERSATIONS WITH YOUR COMMUNITY

Conversations prompted by the film can create connection, which is integral to understanding and change. We've put together a detailed guide for hosting a screening and starting conversations with your guests, which you’ll receive once your screening has been approved.

For a taste, download our short conversation guide below, that we put together in partnership with Life Rites and Transcend Australia.
